The Winter Music Concert is Thursday, December 13th at 7:00 pm
Performing will be Beginning and Advanced Band, Choir, Jazz Ensemble, Trogdor and African Drumming. Note that students from first-quarter term Drumming class will be performing. All are welcome to attend. Admission is a suggested $5 at the door and all donations are welcome. Unless students are accompanied by adults, we ask that they do not sit in the balcony.


Volunteers are also needed! Please sign up if you can help out on Signup Genius. House volunteers can watch the show after helping with the door or concessions. It is great to have adults who do not have students in the show help out so that those who do can enjoy the show.


Thank you to these wonderful volunteers for working at the PTA Clothing Center this week and representing da Vinci: Berglind Erlingsdóttir Tiffany Dempsey, Mary Senatori and Monica Weinger.  


Empathy Club’s Help Drive for Portland Homeless Families Solutions. Please donate if you can! The drive will run through Thursday. Many items on the list can be gently used. Bedding, warm clothing and toiletry items are all needed and appreciated. A collection bin is located in the front hall.


Card sets, ornaments, and merchandise for sale benefitting the PTSA and Visual Arts Departments. In case you missed them at the Arts Fair, we have some student-designed cards and laser cut ornaments still available for sale in the office. This is a great opportunity for some fun holiday shopping AND a nice way to support da Vinci! Ornaments are $7 for a single ornament and $36 for all 6 ornaments. Sets of cards are $18/pack. Items will be for sale before the Music Concert on Thursday.


Locker Cleanout Friday We will add time to the Friday schedule for students to pack up belongings in their lockers. Please encourage your students to bring home dance clothes, extra jackets, old work, food containers, extra lunch boxes, etc. Family adults are more than welcome to come in and help take things home and check out the lost and found that has a large collection of water bottles and assorted items. In the office, we have a surprising assortment of eyeglasses, padlocks, and keys. We also have a backpack with clothing that has gone unclaimed for over a week.


Girls Inc. starting two new groups:
Girls Inc. In Our Own Hands, leadership and community activism group, where girls brainstorm, collaborate and learn the skills to create the changes they want to see in the world. This group will meet on Mondays, 3:30-5 pm, starting January 14. Register online.

Girls Inc. CommuniCare, a fundraising and grant-giving group facilitated by Girls Inc and supported by the Harold & Arlene Schnitzer CARE Foundation, which has granted over $1,250,000 to over 300 local nonprofits and schools over the past twenty years. da Vinci’s CommuniCare will meet Wednesdays 4-5:30, starting January 16.

After School Reminder Please help make arrangements for your student to leave campus after the school day ends. Unless they are in a supervised club or rehearsal, students should not be hanging out on school grounds.

John Hughes High runs one more week- don’t miss it. The da Vinci drama department presents John Hughes High. Tickets are $10 general admission (or pay what you can). See the links on the da Vinci website to purchase tickets in advance or get them at the door. We do still need some volunteer slots filled for the shows to run smoothly.  Volunteers can see another show for free if they work through one. Please sign up using this SignUpGenius site.

Alumni Night for John Hughes High is Thursday, 11/15. Alumni are encouraged to attend the Thursday show and as an incentive, there will be a drawing for tickets from Artists Rep, Third Rail, Shaking the Tree and Portland Center Stage. All former students are eligible with the purchase of a $10 ticket. No other tickets will be sold or given away.

Da Vinci Family-Teacher Conferences, November 19 and 20 Conference days are November 19th and 20th from 8 am to 8 pm. The Signup is live. Students do generally attend conferences with the parent/guardian. Teachers meet with year-long students only. If your student is taking term explore classes, please do not sign up for those teachers. There are two locations for Dance conferences and between the three teachers, they will cover the appointments. You cannot sign up with a specific dance teacher so just find a time that works on either the “Gym” or “Dance Office” tab. Part-time teachers are only at school for part of the times, proportionate to their FTE. Ms. Young and Ms. O’Leary will only be available on Monday, the 19th. Make sure you are in the correct teacher’s tab and note the date and time you are signing up for. If your plans change, be sure to delete your time so another person has a chance to take the slot. Conference slots available with Alison Lanigan, Instructional Specialist This year, two of our teachers are scheduled for several periods a day as Instructional Specialists, providing extra attention to students who need academic support. In addition to meeting with her students in year-long Creative Writing, Ms. Lanigan is offering time slots for families who need more information on how to support student success. These times are especially for those unable to get a slot with the students’ teachers and those whose students are struggling. If you need help to navigate teacher websites, Parentvue/Studentvue or  Google apps, sign up for a slot with Ms. Lanigan!

Conference Sustenance for Teachers While our teachers put in two long days to meet with families, they very much appreciate nourishment provided when they take their breaks. We’d love to have some morning treats and afternoon soup available each day. Please sign up here if you can contribute.

Run for the Arts Thank you! Thanks to everyone who participated in the Run for the Arts fundraiser. We raised $14,283! Additional thanks to Julie Young and Sarah Reese for help with the accounting.

OBOB Update from Ms. Robertson Teams are forming and there is still room to register if your student is interested in the Oregon Battle of the Books. Franklin Open House for 8th-graders Students living in the Franklin boundary area are invited to their open house on Wednesday, November 28th from 6 pm to 8 pm. This is a great opportunity to get a tour of the beautiful new Franklin facilities and learn more about their program.

Benson visit If your 8th-grade student is interested in applying to Benson, there is an upcoming opportunity to visit during the day on November 13th. Students need to arrive by 8:00 am but there will be a bus to bring them back to da Vinci for the afternoon. They must turn in a permission form and be on the list communicated by the counselor to attend. The form is in the hall by Katie the Counselor’s office. More information is here. The lottery window for High Schools opens November 8th. See the PPS Enrollment and Transfer site for more information.

Cleveland High School Bridging the Gap 8th grade information night for Cleveland is scheduled for Wednesday, December 5, at 7:00 pm. Mark your calendar if your student will be going to Cleveland.

Quarter 2 starts Tuesday, October 29th. Students with term-explore classes will start new classes second period only. Lists will be posted outside the office and the cafeteria doors with the new classes. Please use the quarter mark and day off for students for a check-up with your child. Take a look at Parentvue/Studentvue together. Suggest or help them to clean out their binders and get organized for a new start on Tuesday. Make sure they have the supplies they need. We do have many supplies in the office if you need assistance, but it is very helpful when students show up to class prepared and on time.
Lost and Found in the Cafeteria is piling up. Are you wondering where the lunch box, water bottle and 3 hoodies that you started out the school year with went? They’re probably in the lost and found. Please come in and take a look or insist your student go look for their things. We will need to move all this out before the Arts Fair set up and unclaimed items will get donated.
Halloween is Wednesday. Students are allowed to wear costumes to school but please, no weapons or weapon-like objects or images. Please refrain from costumes that are violent or gory, and those that will interfere with being present and functioning in class. Students will need to dress down for dance and dance as PE class. There is a special schedule for a talent show at the end of the day. If you need to pick up your student early, please make arrangements early because we cannot easily pull them from the auditorium in the last hour of the day. Apologies in advance for the auto-dialer calls that get triggered on dance as PE Wednesdays, especially when we have special schedules. The calls are triggered before we can reconcile the attendance and correct the absent marks. It is an imperfect system and we are looking for solutions.

Chinook Books and App In just a few days we need to return unsold books make a final payment for the products we sold. Fifty percent of sales go to the PTSA. Books are $25 and the app is $15.Send in your student with a check and we’ll give them a book or app to take home to you or come on in.
Does your child play a string instrument? Looking for members for a Chamber music ensemble after school. From a da Vinci parent: Ellis (6th grader) plays the violin and needs to be playing with a group of kids (for the fun, learning, etc.). Does your child play the violin, viola, cello, or bass and have an interest in playing with other da Vinci students once a week after school? A violinist friend has generously agreed to mentor a group to get them started. Please respond to me, Katherine Deumling (kdeumling@gmail.com) if you’re interested.

Locker Painting Thank you for all the support of our locker painting tradition. If students want to continue painting, they can do so after school but they must have an adult supervising them. Stop by the office and get a tarp. Please keep the floor protected and do not use bathroom sinks to wash out brushes.

Locker Painting this week. The priming is done (thank you, volunteers!) and we’re getting ready for painting days for students. Make sure you have reviewed and approved the student design sheet if your student is planning to paint their locker. The design must be approved by an adult at home and the first-period teacher. Please help your student gather necessary supplies before Wednesday. The design sheet with do’s and don’ts is on the website if you didn’t see it come home. We still need a lot of help. Volunteers staff stations for distributing common supplies, set up and clean up, wash brushes and generally help direct traffic. Please sign up and come in if you can. It’s a sight to see. Drama Department Rummage Sale Thanks to everyone who came to shop at the drama rummage sale last week. The department will set up again Friday, October 19th (outside, weather permitting, or in the drama room). Come hunt through our collection and find a treasure or something fabulous for Halloween. All proceeds benefit the Drama Dept.

Oregon Battle of the Books (OBOB) at da Vinci   Please visit our school library’s website (https://www.pps.net/Page/12911)  for more information on OBOB and the schedule of OBOB events at da Vinci. All information has been updated for this year. Printed registration forms are also ready for students in the library. The deadline for registration is Friday, November 30th, 2018. There is no charge to participate. The da Vinci library has 4-5 copies of each of the 16 titles for students to read to take part in the competition. Below is the timeline of events for OBOB. More information can be found on the website. Please Contact Ms. Robertson srobertson@pps.net if you have additional questions.
1. November 16- Attend the mandatory meeting in the library during lunch.
2. November 30- Deadline to register! Register your team
with the librarians at da Vinci. Each team member must fill out the OBOB registration form & have parents and block teacher sign it.

4. January 14th-February 15th, 2019 Battles are held during

Da Vinci Arts Fair Call for Artists The annual da Vinci Arts Fair is Saturday, December 1st. The deadline for application is October 15th.  The Arts Fair is a community event and fundraiser for the PTSA. Artists are selected by a jury and pay a booth fee. There is a $10 application fee this year.
Student Artist announcement Students also have an opportunity to be a vendor in the Arts Fair. Interested students must attend one of the following meetings in order to receive an application and ask any questions about the event: October 24th after school or November 7th at lunch. Students do not have to pay for a booth but must donate 30% of their sales at the end of the event.
Workshop for Linoleum Block Relief prints with Erika Johnson Here’s an opportunity for students to make art for the Fair, Sat. & Sun. November 17 & 18 from 10 am - 3 pm, ages 10 and up
“Come to create Holiday cards in this fun 2-day linocut printmaking workshop. Relief is an easy-to-learn kind of printmaking that you can do in a home studio set-up. This beginner's workshop will teach everything you need to know to produce your own linoleum prints for cards, posters, t-shirts!

Great for teenagers as well as artists of all ages. Workshop Fee $125 plus $15 materials fee includes one 5 x 8 Golden cut lino block, water-based inks, 20 sheets cardstock, 10 envelopes, inks, tools, and pizza for lunch! “

Clay Club to start October 24th For 3D Art Students who are dreaming of projects they can’t get done during class or just want to learn new skills and have more time with clay.

Clay Club will be limited to 15 participants (first come first serve) and all students must be a current year-long 3D art students (due to storage limitations). PTSA Membership Please support da Vinci by joining our school PTSA! The fee is $20 each and forms are available in the office. We count on membership funds to support all we do at da Vinci. So far, we have just 42 members signed up and we would love to reach or break our goal of 150 members.
